Recording videos with smartphones have gradually become a common act in the new day, especially among youths. Many people want to capture some of the best moments and scenes around them and share them with friends.

Sometimes, it is not just about recording a video but being the first to post it online, become famous and get more followers.

A typical Android phone has a front and rear camera to make video recordings. Interestingly, the same hardware component on devices is used for taking pictures. We discussed that in our recent post on how to take pictures on Android.

The camera app is the Android default application for taking photos and making video recordings. It has the option to start and stop your recordings and some effects that can be used in making a good video.

Also available is a timer which lets you see the length of the video you are making. Videos made with the camera app are saved under the “Camera” folder in your device storage. You can preview any recently recorded video from the Camera app or view it from the Photos app.

However, some third-party apps on the Google Play Store can also be used to serve this purpose. This post will consider making a video recording using the camera app.

How to Record a Video on Android

To record a video on your Android phone, follow the procedure below. But before you proceed, ensure you have the camera app pre-installed on your device. Otherwise, you can install it.

Open your camera app

Find and launch the camera app on your device to see the camera screen. By default, you can take pictures using the circular button on the bottom of your screen. If you want to record a video, you must switch to the video screen.

Switch to the video screen

Locate the video option on the camera app and tap it to switch to the video screen. This will change the camera function and get it ready for video recording.

There are a couple of options available for you here. Above the screen are options to enable or disable flashlights, image quality and filters for your video. You can also begin recording, pause and stop it from this screen. In addition, there is an option that lets you see recently recorded videos.

To begin recording a video, locate and select the round white button with a red dot inside it. This automatically records a video using your phone’s rear camera. You need to tap the camera switch option to record a video with the front camera.

While your video is being recorded, you can pause or stop it and take a picture. Only use the stop button when you are done recording.

Stop Recording

To stop recording a video, use the stop button. You can find this option below the recording screen. After selecting it, your video stops recording and is automatically saved to your device gallery.

To see a recorded video, you can select the option from the camera app. The option is found to the left of the record button. Tapping it will let you see your last recording in full screen. You can also see other recent works by swiping to the left side of your screen.

Possible issues with video recording on Android

Some old devices do not allow you to record for more than 10 minutes at a time. In other cases, your device may have low storage to record a video.

You can free your storage space or choose a low quality before recording a video. But if your phone maker sets the limit, you can buy a better device.

Other ways to record on Android

Aside from the camera functionality, the Android OS also has a pre-installed screenshot and screen recording feature. The feature allows you to grab whatever you have on your screen.

Let’s say you have a picture or video on your screen but can’t save it; the screenshot/screen recording option will come in handy. If you do not have the feature, then your device is probably running a very old Android OS. In this case, you must install a third-party app that does this from the Google Play Store.

To use the screen recording option, you can select it from the options hidden inside the notification tray. You must drag the notification tray down and find the screen recording option.

Also, some device has some quick functions hidden to the sides of their screen. You must drag the screen from the edge and hold it if you have one such device. Select the screen record option from the phone features on your screen.

When your screen is being recorded, a recording button with a timer to indicate the duration of the video is displayed on your screen. This button will be used to stop the video.

Once a screen recording process is stopped, your video will be automatically saved to your device storage.

Note that you may perform a screen recording with or without sound. A recording without sound usually takes little space in your storage.
