Google owns the Android operating system. Smartphones using the Android OS can perform a wide range of functions, including taking pictures and videos, making voice recordings, listening to music, watching videos, making and receiving calls, surfing the Internet, and more.

You only need to get the specific app for an Android device to perform a function. The official Android apps store, Google Play Store, has many safe apps for your use. The list of the ten most popular apps on the platform is dominated by social media applications, including WhatsApp, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram.

If you want to make a call on your Android device, you can use the default Phone app or install any third-party app that performs this function.

The Phone app is pre-installed on most Android devices to allow users to make and receive calls easily. It also lets you record a call and block specific phone numbers from calling, among other functions.

The Phone app also allows you to set how you want to answer calls, record them and set up speed dials. A third-party alternative with similar features is the TrueCaller app.

If you want to start making calls on your phone, you have come to the right place. We have discussed everything you need to make or receive your first call below.

Note that we will be considering the Phone app for illustration purposes in this guide. To identify the Phone app, go to your “All apps” page on the device and locate one named “Phone”. It is an app with a white telephone icon on a green background.

How to Make a Call on Android

To make a call on an Android device, you need to have the default call dialer app, the Phone app already installed on your device. You need to install it on Google Play Store if you do not have it. After installation, you can now proceed to the following steps.

Open the Phone app

To begin with, you need to launch the Phone app on your device by tapping on it. This opens the app, and you can see the “Recents” screen. Here is where you will see a list of calls you made recently. But since you are using the app for the first time, the list will probably be empty.

Also on this page is the dialer pad for typing a phone number you want to call.

Enter a phone number

You need to enter a phone number to call using the dial pad on the “Recents” screen. The dial pad has a collection of digits from “1” to “0”, including “*” and “#”. The “0” also doubles for “+” in case you want to dial a phone number with the international code.

In case the dial pad is minimized, you need to open it. Locate the option to the left or right side close to your bottom screen and tap it. Next, type the phone number correctly and go to the next step.

You can also go to the “Contacts” screen and select an already saved contact to call.

Send your call

After entering a phone number using the dial pad, you need to send it to allow the call to go through. The call sending key has a white telephone logo on a green background. You may find it two on devices with dual SIMs.

Tap the call sending key, and your call will be sent. If you have a dual SIMs device, you need to select the one with the correct SIM. The key marked represents the first SIM, while the one with “2” represents the second SIM. Choose the one you want to send your call with to proceed.

If you find a number to call on the “Recents” screen, you need to tap on the Call icon next to the contact name or number to send.

Place your phone close to your ear

Once you send a call, you must place your phone next to either of your ears. This will allow you to hear whether the call got connected or not. If you cannot hear the phone ring, try adjusting your dialer’s volume by using your device’s upper volume key. You can also select the loudspeaker option to listen to it louder.

If the call rings and the receiver picks up, you can begin conversing with them. If they do not answer the call, the call will disconnect after some seconds, and you may have to retry until they pick up or let them call you back when they are available.

Drop the call

If the call connects, the receiver picks up, and you are done with the conversation, you can terminate the call. To do this, remove your phone next to your ear and tap the while telephone icon on a red background. This immediately disconnects, and you will return to the “Recents” screen on the Phone app.

How to Receive a Call on Android

If you notice your phone ringing, someone is trying to reach you. First, check your phone screen to see the caller’s identity. If it is a saved contact, you will get their name. Otherwise, you only get to see their phone number.

However, there are rare cases you only see a private number. This means the caller has hidden their number, which you cannot see.

To pick up a call, you need to locate the call answering key beneath their name and number, hold it and swipe to the right. This automatically answers the call, and you can place the phone close to your ear to listen to the caller.

In the same way, you can reject a call. To reject a call, hold the call answering key and swipe to the right. If you cannot take a call, there is an option to leave them a quick message to make them know why you can’t answer at that time and when you will call back.

While on a call, you can also increase the volume of the dialer or put your phone on the loudspeaker.

Possible reasons you cannot make a call

If you have issues sending a call through to a line, you either don’t have enough airtime or their line is unavailable. Try calling a different number to find out the exact issue and see if it connects.

You can also check your airtime balance using the specified operator code and recharge if the airtime has been exhausted.

If you tried to reach someone who isn’t available, you need to call them after some time.

Conclusion

Before making a call, note that your network operator will bill your line for it based on the number of seconds used during the call. You can bypass this by making a WhatsApp call which only requires an internet connection.
