Dust and debris will accumulate as a result of air cooling. Any filters used to mitigate this need regular service and changes. If the cooling system is not filtered then regular computer cleaning may prevent short circuits and overheat.

Under this free tutorial on computer maintenance and upgrade, I will be considering hard disk drive: maintenance and upgrade.

A hard disk drive (HDD), hard disk, hard drive or fixed disk is an electromechanical data storage device that uses magnetic storage to store and retrieve digital information using one or more rigid rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with magnetic material.

The platters are paired with magnetic heads, usually arranged on a moving actuator arm, which read and write data to the platter surfaces. Data is accessed in a random-access manner, meaning that individual blocks of data can be stored or retrieved in any order and not only sequentially. HDDs are a type of non-volatile storage, retaining stored data even when powered off.

Backups

Important data stored on computers may be copied and archived securely so that, in the event of failure, the data and systems may be reconstructed. When major maintenance such as patching is performed, a backup is recommended as the first step in case the update fails and reversion is required.

Disk cleanup may be performed as regular maintenance to remove these. Files may become fragmented and so slow the performance of the computer. Disk De-fragmentation may be performed to combine these fragments and so improve performance.

The need to upgrade and maintain our gadget, cannot be overemphasized. For our gadgets to be at it’s best, this is one important thing to consider amongst other components; hard disk drive.

Technology has grown over the years, and it is still growing. The most recent types of hard drives, available are SSD  and HDD.

The first hard drive mentioned above is the most recent type of drive (Solid-state drive), the second have been available before advancement in technology, (Hard Disk Drive). HDD has two connector types namely: IDE Connector & SATA Connector, HDD.

Advancement in technology has lead to the replacement of the IDE HDD. These days, what we have around in gadgets (Desktops & Laptops) are SATA Connectors, HDD.  For SSD’s, they come in SATA Connectors.

Hard Drive Differences

There is much difference between both types of drive, but I will be pointing at these few ones.

  1. SSD has no moving parts, unlike the HDD.
  2. It processes information, about three to five times faster, than HDD.
  3. SSD does not De-fragment, because it is a solid-state device.
  4. Because it is faster, it uses less power, giving you more battery power to work with.
